Breaking a cultural norm Essay
The cultural norm I decided to break, entails entering a friend’s apartment without knocking the door. It is a cultural norm to knock a person’s door before entering. It is taken as a sign of respect for another person’s personal space, and it requires one to wait for an approval from the other person.
I decided to visit my friend Sarah at her apartment. I chose to go to a friend’s house to avoid chances of being mistaken for a thief. Moreover, I did not want to raise alarm in my neighborhood. In addition, I chose Sarah specifically since we were not used to each other.
On reaching her door. I stood there for 5 minutes thinking my next course of action. I was very nervous, and I took a deep breath before I slowly opened the door. As I opened the door, I had her shout loudly, “who is it?” Her voice made a chill run down my spine. I did not know what to say at that moment. I just entered with a big smile on my face. I could see how nervous she was and angry at my action. She did not even smile back. Although I was affected by her response, I gathered enough courage and moved closer to her. I held her hand and told her that I was very sorry and promised her that the next time I will knock before entering. I brought in funny stories to try to cheer her up. After some minutes, she was normal again. However, during the stay at her apartment, I felt ashamed and guilty of what I had done.
